SSR is where a lot of Mountain Home kids start. The desert riding begins close to the edge of town, and this store sells more youth and trail bikes than a dealership our size would expect. Which SSR for a first bike?
For the youngest riders, the SR-E500 is electric. SSR built it around a swappable 48-volt battery and three speed settings a parent presets: 9, 15 and 21 mph. It has a 22.5-inch seat, 10-inch wheels and disc brakes at both ends, and SSR rates it for riders aged 4 to 10. A parent charges it in the garage and never mixes fuel.
Kids ready for a gas engine move to the SR70 or the SR110SE. The 110 has a four-speed semi-automatic gearbox, so a rider learns to shift without learning a clutch at the same time.
When does a rider move to a big-wheel pit bike?
When their knees hit the bars. The SR125RB and SR140RB both roll on a 17-inch front and 14-inch rear wheel, which gets a growing rider over rocks and ruts that stop a 12-inch wheel. The 125RB runs a 125 cc air- and oil-cooled four-stroke with kick and electric start; the 140RB adds displacement and adjustable suspension front and rear.
The desert two-track south of town makes a good test. If your kid spends the ride dabbing a foot on every rock, the bike is too small.
